3. Adversarial Videos

  1. Definition: Adversarial type of video refers to a bold approach where journalists challenge individuals or organisations on controversial topics or questionable actions.
  2. Purpose: To hold the government and its organs accountable and unravel the truths in contentious or inflammable situations.

Techniques:

  1. Observe a professional style and avoid personal attacks. (ad hominem – personal insult or using inappropriate terms)
  2. Be readily prepared to anticipate deflections, narratives, digression and evasions.
  3. Ensure legal, rules, ethical and cultural conventions are respected before publication.

Workflow:

  1. Identify authoritative individuals or organisations relevant to the news story or events.
  2. Conduct an online research to know their statements or actions to identify inconsistencies.
  3. Come up with well-crafted and precise, fact-based questions.
  4. Maintain calmness under pressure and be conscious of your line of questioning.
  5. Use footage, audio, graphic illustrations, presentation or timelines to provide a context.

Tools to Use:

Data Analysis: Google Trends – Analyse data trends for context.

Interactive Visuals: Tableau Public – Create dynamic graphs and charts.

Narration: NaturalReader – Add natural-sounding voiceovers.

Video Editing: HitFilm Express – Powerful editing for data-heavy content.

Process:

  1. Use Google Trends to analyse and visualise data related to your topic.
  2. Design interactive charts in Tableau Public to explain complex trends.
  3. Record narration using NaturalReader to ensure clarity.
  4. Edit in HitFilm Express, integrating visuals and voiceover for polished delivery.
  5. Use InVID to authenticate multimedia claims and identify discrepancies.
  6. Script the video to emphasize evidence-based confrontation.
  7. Create bold text overlays in Canva Pro to highlight false claims and rebuttals.
  8. Edit in Final Cut Pro for sharp cuts and clear transitions between facts.

Use Case: Questioning a public official about alleged misuse of public funds.
