7. Explanatory Videos

  1. Definition: Videos aimed to illustrate complicated or complex topics or events behind headlines or implicit in journalistic articles for a general audience.
  2. Purpose: To educate, inform, explain, entertain and advise without overwhelming the viewer.

Techniques:

  1. Use interactive videos, animations, infographics, or step-by-step breakdowns.
  2. Language – keep interactive, straight and simple (KISS) style free of jargons.
  3. Enhance interviews by incorporating experts’ views for added authority.

Workflow:

  1. Identify key points the audience needs to easily understand
  2. Try to write a concise script for a brief and short explanation for each point.
  3. Use visuals like charts or animations to enhance clarity and boost understanding.
  4. Edit for brevity and focus on the main take-aways.

Use Case: Explaining how algorithms amplify disinformation on social media.
